It All Starts with a Question… and Not Just Any Question

It all starts with a question — and not just any question.

Not the kind that seeks the right answer. Not the kind that checks for recall or makes sure the reading was done. But the kind of question that opens a door. That invites curiosity. That sparks a pause.

The kind of question that lingers.

In education — and in life — the right question can shift a conversation, reframe a struggle, or unlock understanding. It can move us from compliance to engagement, from silence to reflection, from surface to depth.

It can sound like:

  • What makes you say that?
  • What would happen if we tried it differently?
  • How does this connect to something you care about?
  • What do you need right now to move forward?

Questions like these don’t just teach content — they build thinkers. They challenge assumptions. They give students (and colleagues) permission to wonder, to struggle, and to speak.

So as we plan lessons, lead teams, or simply try to connect — maybe the most important thing we can prepare is not the perfect slide deck or activity.

Maybe it’s the question that gets us started.
The one that says: You matter. Your thoughts matter. Let’s go deeper.

Because the right question doesn’t just open minds.

It opens doors.
