Piccolo Teatro

I said this to a group of colleagues the other day. We were talking about the apparent apathy we see in students—and in many adults.

“Failing to show up is giving the world your consent to move on without you.”

Their response was thoughtful. They said the line had weight—but maybe it was too harsh. That life is messier than that. That sometimes people don’t show up because they’re tired, overwhelmed, unsure—not because they’ve decided to be left behind.

And they’re not wrong.

But they were circling a different goal.

They were trying to protect against discouragement.

Me? I’m trying to provoke responsibility.

Because yes—life is messy. But within that mess, people still make choices.
They choose to step forward… or they don’t.
They choose to show up… or they don’t.

So I rephrased it:

“Failing to show up is giving the world your consent to move on without you. So show up—especially when it’s hard.”

Because at the end of the day, I’m not really talking about attendance.

I’m talking about presence.

And presence isn’t automatic. Presence is not a state you fall into. It’s a discipline you choose—again and again.
