I heard this today, and it stayed with me.
At first, it sounds like a simple observation about a river. But it’s really about life.
Heraclitus reminds us that two things are always changing. The river is never the same because fresh water is constantly flowing through it. And the person is never the same because every conversation, every success, every failure, every heartbreak, every ordinary day leaves its mark.
We spend so much of our lives trying to go back—to the people we were, the places we loved, the moments we wish we could relive. But there is no going back.
The river has moved on.
So have we.
Maybe that’s why memories feel different every time we revisit them. Why old friends seem both familiar and new. Why returning to a place from our childhood never feels quite the way we remember. We’re looking through different eyes because we’ve become different people.
That’s not something to mourn.
It’s something to appreciate.
Change isn’t something that happens to us. It’s who we are. Every experience shapes us into someone who sees the world a little differently than the person we were yesterday.
Perhaps the goal isn’t to find our way back to who we used to be.
Perhaps the goal is to embrace the person we’re becoming.
