Being hyper-focused and completely distracted at the same time.
It is possible. I know. I sometimes live that reality. If I am being honest? I always live this reality.
It’s that magical state where your brain is laser-focused on seventeen things simultaneously… while accomplishing none of the things you originally sat down to do.
And somehow you’re both:
“DO NOT INTERRUPT ME. I’M IN THE ZONE.”
and
“Wait… why did I come into this room?”
Hyper-focused and completely distracted aren’t opposites.
Sometimes they’re roommates.
When you live with ADHD, this sort of thing is basically commonplace. And with someone like me, with a head full of hyper-caffeinated brain monkeys all fighting over the steering wheel… well, let’s just say it isn’t exactly a surprise.
I can spend three straight hours obsessively researching the perfect solution to a problem I didn’t know existed until four hours ago… but forget why I walked into the kitchen.
I can hear a tiny, unfamiliar noise coming from somewhere in the house and immediately begin an FBI-level investigation… and somehow not hear someone standing six feet away saying my name three times.
I’ll sit down at the computer to pay one bill. Twenty minutes later, I have 14 browser tabs open, I’m comparing lawn equipment, reading about an obscure historical event, watching a video explaining how suspension bridges work, and wondering whether I could build a pizza oven in the backyard.
The bill?
Still unpaid.
And God help me if I suddenly become interested in something.
Food? Optional.
Sleep? Negotiable.
The passage of time?
A rumor.
But ask me where I put my glasses?
No idea. Probably on my head.
That’s the strange little contradiction of it all. I can have the concentration of a bomb technician and the attention span of a golden retriever who just saw a squirrel.
Sometimes simultaneously.
So yes, being hyper-focused and completely distracted at the exact same time.
It is possible. I know because I occasionally live there.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to what I was doing.
As soon as I remember what that was.

Telling stories, sharing thoughts, and drinking coffee. A blend of fiction, reflection, and whatever’s brewing—one post at a time.
Stories have always traveled best by word of mouth. If one of these finds a place in your heart, I’d be honored if you’d drop a like or share it with someone else.
