It’s always been such a tough call!
Will it be Cap’n Crunch? Frosted Flakes? Cocoa Krispies? Cocoa Puffs? And then comes the million-dollar question… do I add banana?!
I swear, this has been one of life’s greatest dilemmas for me since I was a kid. You’d think after all these years I would have figured it out, but NOPE! They’re ALL so damn good!
There was something magical about those childhood mornings. Standing in the kitchen, staring at those colorful cereal boxes, trying to make what seemed like the most important decision of the day.
Forget homework. Forget chores. Forget whatever else the day had in store.
I had a breakfast dilemma to resolve! And they were all going in the bowl…at the sam=e time. Banana too!
And then there was this little trick my brother and I used to pull. We’d take our already ridiculously sweet bowls of cereal and sprinkle some Ovaltine or Hershey’s Quik powder right on top!
Oh, yeah! Because apparently, regular chocolate milk just wasn’t chocolatey enough for us!
And YES, I KNOW! The Cocoa Krispies and Cocoa Puffs already turned the milk chocolatey. But try explaining that logic to a couple of kids who had just discovered they could turn breakfast into dessert.
That’s an argument you’re never going to win!
Besides, there was something wonderfully rebellious about creating your own concoction. No recipe. No rules. No adult supervision required. Just two brothers exercising their God-given right to completely disregard the recommended serving size!
Looking back, those weren’t just bowls of cereal. They were little moments of childhood happiness, the kind you don’t realize you’ll miss until decades have passed.
Now, you might think I eventually outgrew this madness. You would be wrong.
Fast-forward to my college days.
I was working at a dining hall, and one random morning, during my break, I decided to revisit my childhood masterpiece. Only this time, I had something my younger self could only have dreamed of… an entire college dining hall at my disposal!
Oh, this was going to be GOOD! I grabbed a bowl. A BIG bowl.
Cap’n Crunch? IN!
Frosted Flakes? IN!
Cocoa Krispies? IN!
Cocoa Puffs? YOU BET!
Banana? ABSOLUTELY!
And because apparently I hadn’t committed enough crimes against conventional breakfast etiquette, I topped the whole glorious creation with a generous helping of Hershey’s chocolate syrup!
Yes, SYRUP!
I’d evolved. I’d matured. I’d taken my childhood culinary genius to a whole new level! Somewhere, my eight-year-old self was giving me a standing ovation.
As I was assembling this magnificent monstrosity, I noticed a kid watching me. Actually, watching isn’t quite the right word.
He was STARING. Mouth practically hanging open.
He looked like he was witnessing something that defied every law of breakfast he’d ever known. Like he’d just watched a grown man casually break some sacred, unwritten cereal commandment.
I finished my masterpiece, turned to head toward a table, and there he was…
Still staring.
I took a big spoonful, looked at him, gave him a little nod, and said,
“What’s up?”
He looked at me in absolute disbelief and asked,
“ARE YOU SERIOUS?!”
I calmly took another spoonful, looked him dead in the eye, and replied… “F*** YEAH!”**
And I went on enjoying my breakfast. No explanation. No apology. No regrets. Because what was I supposed to say?
“I’m sorry, young man, but you clearly don’t understand the sophisticated culinary traditions of my childhood.”
PLEASE!
Some people grow out of their childhood habits. I just graduated to Hershey’s syrup! And now, here I am, knocking on retirement’s door, and guess what? I STILL whip up this culinary masterpiece every so often!
Only now, the recipe has evolved.
Sometimes Trix joins the party. Sometimes Honey Nut Cheerios makes a guest appearance. Because why limit greatness to just four cereals when you can have SIX?!
It’s called expanding your horizons, people! And yes, the banana still makes an appearance. And the chocolate? Well, let’s just say some traditions are too sacred to abandon.
Of course, these days I follow up my magnificent bowl of childhood nostalgia with a nice, hot cup of coffee.
You know… to remind myself that I’m a responsible, mature adult. A responsible, mature adult who occasionally eats six different kinds of cereal in one bowl, topped with bananas and chocolate syrup.
Hey, nobody’s perfect!
But here’s the thing… Every once in a while, when I sit down with one of those ridiculous bowls, I’m not just having breakfast. For a few wonderful minutes, I’m that kid again. The one standing in the kitchen with his brother, plotting how much chocolate powder they could get away with dumping into their cereal.
The one who didn’t worry about getting older, paying bills, working for a living, or what tomorrow might bring. The one whose biggest problem that morning was deciding between Cap’n Crunch and Cocoa Puffs.
And you know what? I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. Funny how something as simple as a bowl of cereal can take you back fifty years in a single spoonful.
So… Hey, don’t judge! Maybe one day you’ll be brave enough to try this glorious concoction yourself… Or at least desperate enough! And if you do, don’t be surprised if some kid looks at you like you’ve completely lost your mind.
Just take another spoonful, look him straight in the eye, and tell him… “F*** YEAH!”**
Because growing older is inevitable.
But growing up?
I’m still not convinced it’s necessary!
