Recently, someone asked me if I had ever considered releasing an audiobook version of my book.
I hadn’t given it much thought before, but the question stuck with me.
With today’s technology, creating an audiobook is more possible than ever. I’ve been told that I could probably record it myself and release it without too much difficulty. And while that would certainly be an interesting experience, if an audiobook ever became a reality, there are only two voices I would want reading it: first, John Leguizamo, and second, Gabriel Iglesias.
That’s it.
In that order.
A pipe dream? Absolutely.
But then again… what if?
I’m not talking about an audiobook as a marketing tool; I’m talking about it as an extension of storytelling and accessibility.
As a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how the right narrator can transform a book. Two of my favorite classroom novels came with companion audiobooks: Maniac Magee, narrated by S. Epatha Merkerson, and Stargirl, narrated by John Ritter. Both books were written by Jerry Spinelli, one of my favorite authors.
Those narrators didn’t simply read the stories—they brought them to life. They gave the characters personality, emotion, and heart. Their performances helped students connect with the stories in ways that printed words alone sometimes could not. For struggling readers and English learners especially, the audiobooks became a bridge into the world of the story.
That’s what I would want for my own book.
Not just someone reading the words, but someone who could capture the humor, the warmth, the culture, and the memories woven throughout the pages. Someone who could make listeners feel like they’re sitting on a porch, sharing stories with an old friend.
Will it ever happen?
Probably not.
But every book starts as a dream before it becomes a reality.
And if an audiobook ever finds its way into the world, I already know who I’d want behind the microphone.
Until then, I’ll keep writing—and if either John Leguizamo or Gabriel Iglesias happens to be reading this, my people know how to find your people.
(Mmmmm, maybe I should start by getting some people first…)
