If someone were tasked with writing my owner’s manual, the first page would contain one very important warning: Do not operate before coffee.
I’ve learned a few things about myself over the years. Some are admirable. Some… not so much. But one truth has become impossible to ignore.
I don’t ask for much from life. A little peace. A little quiet. Maybe a few uninterrupted minutes before the world starts making demands.
And caffeine. Definitely caffeine.
I’ve often been accused of being fueled by coffee and chaos, and frankly, I can see why. But let’s not get reckless here.
Coffee comes first.
Always has.
Always will
It would be genuinely irresponsible for me to attempt to function without first consuming at least an ounce—or twelve—of liquid caffeine. Usually in the form of coffee. Sometimes espresso with just enough cream to convince myself it’s sophisticated and not simply a survival mechanism.
Call it coffee.
Call it espresso.
Call it brown bean juice.
Call it whatever you want.
I call it the difference between “Good morning!” and “Please don’t speak to me until this mug is empty.”
There’s something almost magical about it. That rich aroma quietly filling the room. The first curl of steam rising from the cup like a promise. That first sip—bold, bitter, smooth, and somehow capable of rebooting an entire human being. Scientists will tell you it’s chemistry. I prefer to think it’s sorcery with a caffeine content.
People insist breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Those people have clearly never had coffee. Coffee is breakfast. It’s also brunch, an acceptable lunch companion, the official beverage of afternoon meetings that should have been emails, and, if we’re being honest, a perfectly reasonable dessert.
I’ve heard people ask, “Isn’t that your third cup?”
First of all, that’s an incredibly personal question.
Second, are we counting refills? Because I don’t.
Now, about the “chaos” part… I’d like to officially state that I am not fueled by chaos. I simply have an unusual ability to find myself standing in the middle of situations that have somehow spiraled completely out of control.
Coincidence? Probably.
Suspiciously frequent coincidence? Maybe.
Can anyone actually prove I’m powered by chaos? No.
Can anyone conclusively rule it out? Also no.
Until that investigation is complete, I’ll continue operating under the assumption that I’m fueled exclusively by coffee. The chaos is just… an energetic side effect. Besides, coffee isn’t a beverage anymore. It’s part of my morning startup sequence.
Eyes open.
Locate coffee.
Consume coffee.
Wait for humanity to load.
Without that process, I’m basically running on the emotional equivalent of a laptop with 2% battery and seventeen browser tabs open. Sure, I might function… but there’s going to be a lot of spinning wheels, poor decisions, and at least one unexpected shutdown.
Some people wake up refreshed.
I wake up available for updates.
The coffee installs them.
I’ve often wondered what my blood type is these days. It probably used to be something official, but after years of dedicated research, there’s a decent chance it’s now “Medium Roast Positive.”
My doctor hasn’t confirmed that, mostly because I haven’t asked. Some questions are better left unanswered.
And yes, I know caffeine is technically a stimulant. To me, it’s more of a personality stabilizer. Without it, I don’t become mean. I become… unfinished.
Like a sentence that just…
Or a loading bar stuck at 12%.
People mistake that for being “grumpy.” No, no. That’s simply the factory settings before the caffeine patch has been installed.
Then comes that first sip. It’s almost cinematic. The world sharpens into focus. Colors become brighter. Words begin arranging themselves into complete thoughts. The birds sound less like shrieking dinosaurs and more like nature. I suddenly remember passwords, appointments, and the names of people I’ve known for years.
It’s nothing short of miraculous.
Right about then, I realize the absurd lengths we coffee drinkers go to justify our dependence on this magic brown potion.
We don’t say we’re addicted.
We’re “particular about our morning routine.”
We don’t need caffeine. We’re simply “not at peak performance” until we’ve had a cup.
Maybe it’s time to petition the FDA to recognize caffeine for what it truly is: an approved life-support system. There should be insurance coverage, refill prescriptions, and perhaps a little medical bracelet that reads, “If found before coffee, administer espresso immediately.”
Honestly, it would probably save lives… or at least prevent a lot of unnecessary morning conversations.
Could I survive without coffee? Probably.
But why would anyone knowingly choose to downgrade from “fully operational adult” to “confused woodland creature” before eight in the morning?
Life is hard enough.
Chaos can wait.
Caffeine comes first.
Please pass the brown bean juice.

Telling stories, sharing thoughts, and drinking coffee. A blend of fiction, reflection, and whatever’s brewing—one post at a time.
Stories have always traveled best by word of mouth. If one of these finds a place in your heart, I’d be honored if you’d drop a like or share it with someone else.
